The Office of National Statistics (ONS) has published the revised SIC 2026 framework with wording proposed by the Digital Creators’ APPG included in the explanatory notes with our suggested changes.
This means creator-led businesses now have a clearer classification and won't face unnecessary friction when accessing loans or government support schemes. It’s also a crucial first step in the Government having the data it needs to further champion our sector.
Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes underpin company registration, lending decisions and government support schemes. Getting them right means creators can access finance and support without unnecessary friction.
Thanks to the new wording, independent video producers, podcasters and creators will now find it easier to access business loans, government-backed grants and official support schemes.
The new wording for SIC code 59.112 ‘Video production activities', now reads: “production of videos including videos or vlogs for the internet (e.g. for content sharing sites)”. This follows an update to the inclusionary guidance (explanatory notes) by ONS.

Publication by ONS of the revised SIC 2026 framework came after the Digital Creators’ APPG, alongside prominent industry figures, formally wrote to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, asking the Government to "properly recognise the UK’s booming creator economy". The updated framework is available on the ONS website here.
